The Slik Word

A quarterly newsletter for owners of Playboys Slik Lena-bred horses.

March 2002  Vol. 1

This is the first issue of what I hope to be an on-going project.  I envision this newsletter to be a way to market "Slik" foals and help keep up-to-date on their achievements.

I am also going on record with this issue, to say that sometime this summer we will have the first annual 2002 SLIK SUNFLOWER SEED CLASSIC.  This will be open to all "Slik" three and four year olds, and the winner will walk away with One Million Sunflower Seeds !! (Something to shoot for).  Actually, I look at it as a day to get together, work your foals on some fresh cattle, and have a barbeque.  Hope to see you there.  Dates and times will follow in the next newsletter.

MARKETING

I have found that the time to market these foals is after having 60 days of training as 2 year olds.  The fall of their 2 year old year or early as 3 year olds, is the time to get them sold or get them to cutting or reining trainers.

If anyone has a foal to sell or needs to contact a trainer, please let me know and I would be happy to help you set something up.

PERFORMERS

Last year, three "Slik" foals were trained and shown by Regan Lyons.  The horse that he owns, Slik Storm, was a money earner in the 2001 Cowboy Classic Futurity, and then as a finalist in the 2001 Nebraska Open Futurity, finishing 7th out of 75.

Slik Hick, a four year old, was also a finalist in the 2001 Non Pro Derby at the Wyoming Futurity.  Both he, and his younger brother, Slik Dun Doc, are both proving to be strong competitors, and I am excited about their prospects for this coming year.

NEWS FROM OTHER OWNERS

This year, Joann Wagner and David Mancinelle, of _______, Colorado, are real excited about Joann's 3 year old, Lady Bug.  She shows a lot of promise.

Joe and Ann Archuleta own a "Slik" 3 year old filly, named Moon Olena.  Joe is currently working with her and looks forward to showing her.

Justin Johnson is training Questionable Playboy, a 3 year old gelding out of Andrew Lyons' Vibrant Peppy mare.  Justin says that this 3 year old is coming along real well.

Steve James, of ____________ Ranches, has a 3 year old gelding that belongs to Frank and Kathy Guffey of _____________, Wyoming.

I'm sure we'll see a lot of these young Slik-bred horses at the Cowboy Classic Futurity in September.  Slik is paid up in the Cowboy Classic Futurity and Derby, the Central Wyoming Cutting Club Stallion Stakes, Kansas Breeders Futurity, the Rocky Mountain Stallion Stakes, and the Sandhills Reined Cowhorse Stallion Stakes.

And finally, I want to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you who have brought mares to Slik.  It has helped to know that people believe in Slik as much as I do.  Anyhow, thanks for the support.
